The Instrument
Though it is not quite certain which Boie, father
or one of two sons, was responsible for this design, it seems
most likely that it was Friedrich Boie, who succeeded Johann
Friedrich at some time before or after his death in 1809 and
continued his business making flutes and clarinets. The Boie
flute is of course a fully-fledged 19th-century instrument,
with a range down to B for playing Viennese repertoire that
otherwise would require a Koch, Ziegler, or similar instrument.
